The 25L version of the TRED GT storage box

John Ford checks out the TRED GT Storage Boxes to expand his LandCruiser 200 Series' external storage capacity.

For our journey with our van to Western Australia, I was looking for a place to store some equipment that I was keen to keep outside the car but would be accessible if we went exploring without the van. I’ve been aware lately that travelling with gas stoves, cartridges and other flammable equipment in the back of the car might not be the best practice. I’ve seen lids of gas cartridges dislodge when travelling on rough tracks, and the thought of unwanted vapours is unsettling.

When I saw these TRED GT Storage Boxes, I was impressed with their low and solid construction with a weather-resistant seal. A low-profile version would be ideal for carrying on the Ironman 4X4 rooftop rack fitted to the 200 Series. I chose the 25L unit for its low 175mm height, which presents minimal wind resistance on the rack. Internal dimensions are 525mm x 440mm x 115mm, so it’s handy for my intended use.

The lids open four ways

TRED Storage Boxes are Australian-designed and made from UV-resistant automotive-grade polypropylene. They come in a range of sizes. Ridges integrated into the design add strength and allow boxes to be stacked together (TRED link connectivity), while a snap-in TRED link bottle opener connects multiple boxes together. The multi-directional opening lid has locking holes, open four ways or lift off when needed, and open when tie-down points are used. Slots in each corner are designed for 25mm webbing straps, so the box quickly secured to my roof rack where I stacked it with a compact gas stove, some spare butane cartridges, a small and smelly grease gun and a few aerosols. It’s right down the back, so there is simple and convenient access from the rear step. Other features include barbecue feet recesses and screw bosses.

The waterproof design suits a range of uses, including boating and general gear storage when camping. I’m impressed with the sturdy construction of the box. The handles, lid, and locks are all robust and easy to use, so I’m looking forward to years of use. The boxes are available in three colours (sand, grey and black) and two sizes (25L and 65L). The 25L version on review here is $149.95 from A247.
