Looking for a good quality and comfortable chair for your caravanning adventures? Then check out the Helinox Chair One XL.
What to take with you on any caravan trip, especially when on longer trips, often means compromises on what we want and what is practical. Transporting some comfortable chairs is a good example. I have seen many comfortable traditional camping chairs that are bulky and heavy, meaning they take up valuable space.
So, when we had the chance to include a compact Helinox chair on our latest annual getaway, I was initially somewhat sceptical because they looked unstable on a set of spindly legs. How wrong I was!
Helinox pioneered this style of lightweight camp chair in 2012 with the introduction of the Chair One, which is still in the range along with dozens of other versions. The chairs are made from anodised aluminium alloy, with proprietary nylon resin hubs and joining components made from high-strength nylon. The base is 600D polyester with breathable mesh on the back for back support and appropriate heavy-duty stitching and reinforcements.
The Helinox Chair One XL
Our experience with the Helinox Chair One XL camp chair
We have been travelling for the past four months with a Chair One XL, a revised version of the original. I like the portable chair’s compact size when folded into its zip-up carry bag. It weighs only 1.5kg and folds to 47cm x 12cm x 12cm in its custom zippered storage bag. It’s rated to 154kg.
The Helinox Chair One XL has a compact design and is easy to carry
If there’s a criticism of the chair, it’s how tricky it can be to assemble. The legs click into place with stretchy shock cords, and the material base has slots for the four legs. Maybe some tags would help pull the chair base into place, but everyone will develop a method for themselves. We have now used the chair more than 40 times, and as time has passed, setting it up has eased as the material stretched. Even so, I think packing up is equal to large folding chairs when you include getting them into their bags.
Slots for the legs
The aspect that surprised me most was how stable the chair is on a variety of ground. Even on a soft surface, it sits firmly. It is also very comfortable when relaxing for long evenings around a campfire. It takes very little space, so it is easily transported in the car when travelling and is light enough to bring along on hikes to the beach or for relaxing comfortably a waterhole, at outdoor concerts or music festivals.
