When heading off-grid in Australia’s most beautiful and remote locations, having a good-quality water purification unit can be a lifesaver.
A new small and innovative water purification unit producing safe drinking water has now been introduced into the Australian market by a company called ITEHIL (based in United States). The ITEHIL RO Water Purification Unit is a portable system designed to be simple and easy to use and almost silent in operation. The unit is compact, light and uses a two-step water purification process producing water that is free from almost any contamination. It is lightweight so it won’t eat into your payload when travelling.
How the ITEHIL RO Water Purification Unit works
The ITEHIL RO Water Purification Unit has a powerful pump and two removeable filters that purify water and make it safe for drinking. The first filter (Hybrid Filter) removes organic material, pesticides and larger physical particles — this is an Active Carbon Filtration Process.
The second filter is a Reverse Osmosis Filter, which is comprises a membrane with nano-sized pores (0.001 microns) that prevents bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, sugars, limescale, soap scum and any object greater than the pore size passing through into the drinking water.
The two-step filtration system is marketed as making water from potentially polluted areas such as open water, puddles and tanks safe to drink, filtering out almost all contaminants. This is not a desalination unit, and it only filters fresh, non-salt water — it cannot produce fresh water from salt water. The lifespan of the filters will depend on use and the quality of the water being filtered, but the RO filter will last approximately 2000L–3000L while the Hybrid Filter will last approximately 1100L–1500L. A small light on the filtration unit will glow indicating when a filter is approaching its maximum use.
The ITEHIL RO Water Purification Unit is powered via the dual built-in 6000mAh lithium batteries paired with USB-C charging. With a full charge, the unit is stated to produce up to 26.5L of drinking water and will produce 500ml of drinking water per minute.
Where to get it
Water filtration units are ideal for those travelling by vehicle or caravan who have weight constraints or are heading on long off-grid trips where refilling the water tanks will be required. It’s also very handy for those travelling with young kids or large groups, when drinking water can get used up very quickly.
The ITEHIL RO Water Purification Unit is available online via its Australian distributor Skippy Pouches for a RRP of $399 (which includes two filters), with free postage anywhere in Australia. For those travelling to remote locations purchasing additional filters would be prudent.
