Ooni Koda 2: pizza night goes touring

A portable 14-inch gas oven brings high-heat cooking to the campsite, with a design that suits caravan owners looking to make more of their outdoor kitchen.

For many caravan owners, cooking is part of the trip. It might be breakfast outside the van, a simple meal after a day on the road or a shared dinner with friends at camp. The Ooni Koda 2 adds another option to that outdoor kitchen: a compact gas-powered oven designed to cook pizza at high temperatures, as well as a range of other dishes.

The Koda 2 is the latest in Ooni’s gas-powered Koda range. It weighs 16kg, has folding legs and a 14-inch cooking stone, giving travellers a balance between cooking space and portability. Ooni lists the oven at $749 in Australia at the time of writing.

From a backyard idea to a global brand

Ooni’s story began with a familiar frustration: founder Kristian Tapaninaho wanted to make better pizza at home. Along with co-founder Darina Garland, he developed a portable oven intended to reach the intense heat associated with traditional pizza ovens, without needing a permanent outdoor installation.

The company launched its first portable pizza oven in 2012, after turning to Kickstarter to fund its initial production run. Ooni says that launch helped create a new category of outdoor cooking products, bringing high-temperature pizza making into backyards and other outdoor settings. The brand has since expanded into gas, wood-fired and multi-fuel ovens, along with cookware and accessories.

That background is relevant to the Koda 2. It’s built around a straightforward idea: make high-heat cooking easier to set up and use, whether the oven lives in a backyard or is brought out for a weekend away.

Designed for quick outdoor cooking

The Koda 2 runs on gas and is designed for an LPG-compatible standard gas bottle. The hose and regulator are supplied, and an electric spark ignition helps get the oven started. Its side-mounted control dial lets the cook adjust the flame, so the oven can be used for different styles of cooking rather than only at full heat. Ooni says the oven can reach 500°C and cook a Neapolitan-style pizza in about 60 seconds once it is up to temperature.

A key update is Ooni’s G2 Gas Technology. The redesigned burner uses a tapered flame to distribute heat across the cooking stone. Ooni says this improves heat distribution compared with the first-generation Koda 12 and helps the stone recover more quickly between pizzas. It also says the Koda 2 is ready to cook in around 20 minutes when heated to 400°C.

For a group meal, faster recovery between cooks can help keep dinner moving. Rather than waiting a long time for the stone to heat back up after each pizza, cooks can prepare a run of pizzas in succession. The 14-inch stone also allows room for larger pizzas than the original Koda 12, while the oven remains relatively compact.

A practical fit for caravan trips

The oven’s portability is one of its most relevant features for touring. At 16kg, it can be moved between storage and an outdoor cooking area, while its folding legs help make it easier to pack away. Ooni’s listed dimensions are 54.5cm long, 47.2cm wide and 33.3cm high when unboxed, which gives caravan owners useful measurements to compare with their storage space.

Gas operation also offers a familiar cooking setup for many travellers, without the need to carry wood or manage charcoal. Once positioned outdoors and connected to a compatible gas bottle, the oven can be used for an evening meal without taking up space inside the caravan or relying on the van’s cooking facilities.

As with any high-heat appliance, campsite conditions matter. The Koda 2 is an outdoor oven, so it should be used outside, on a stable surface and in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. Caravan park and campground rules can vary, so it’s sensible to check whether an outdoor gas oven is permitted before setting up. Owners should also confirm their gas bottle and connection are compatible; Ooni says the Koda 2 is not suitable for natural gas connections or conversion.

More than pizza

Pizza may be the headline, but the Koda 2 is designed for other outdoor meals too. Ooni lists steaks, vegetables, dips and skillet dishes among its suggested uses. That versatility could make the oven more useful to travellers who want to pack one appliance for several types of cooking.

For caravan owners, the appeal is as much about the experience as the menu. Preparing dough and toppings can become part of the evening, with each person choosing their own combination before the pizzas go into the oven. It’s a style of cooking that suits relaxed outdoor meals and can bring a group together around the campsite.

The Koda 2’s high temperatures also make it different from a conventional barbecue or camp stove. The stone provides a cooking surface for pizza, while the flame delivers the heat needed for a short bake. That means a little preparation is still required: cooks need to have dough, toppings and a suitable peel ready before launching a pizza into the oven.

A portable oven with a longer view

Ooni’s Australian website lists a standard one-year warranty for its products, with a five-year warranty available for the Koda 2 when the oven is registered within 60 days of receipt. That registration requirement is worth adding to the post-purchase checklist.

For caravan owners considering an outdoor cooking upgrade, the Ooni Koda 2 presents a compact alternative to a fixed pizza oven. Its 14-inch cooking area, gas operation and 16kg weight are intended to make it practical to move and quick to use, while the high-temperature design opens up possibilities beyond pizza.

It won’t suit every trip or every campsite, and owners will need to account for storage space, a compatible gas supply and site rules. But for travellers who enjoy cooking outdoors and want to bring a little more variety to camp dinners, the Koda 2 offers a portable way to turn pizza night into part of the journey.
