We’re excited to announce that our sister brand Hema Maps has released the first edition of its Top End and Gulf Atlas & Guide. Copies hit the Caravan World desk in May, with many in the team keen to check out the latest information and plan some trips north.
Written by travel writer and photographer Chris Whitelaw, the Top End and Gulf Atlas & Guide covers key destinations across the Top End and Gulf Country — from Darwin and the Tiwi Islands to Kakadu, Nitmiluk, Litchfield and Judbarra/Gregory national parks, Arnhem Land, the Gulf Coast and the Barkly Tableland.
Like all Hema Maps’ products, this 232-page guide has been designed to be both informative and practical, combining reliable cartography with cultural insights and historical stories from the Indigenous and European development of the region. It’s a handy reference for travellers wanting to gain a deeper understanding of the region while planning their route.
The guide also features the top five 4WD trips for the region:
- Boodjamulla* (Lawn Hill) National Park
- Limmen National Park
- Judbarra/Gregory National Park
- Cobourg Peninsula (West Arnhem Land)
- Hardies and Wildman River
Each trip is coded by vehicle type, and vehicle suitability icons also help readers assess which trips match their setup. There’s detailed information regarding difficulty grading, elevations and distances, key permit details and contact information, plus points of interest (POI), camping areas and supply points.

For those heading offroad, the guide includes information on private camping areas, caravan parks and accredited visitor information centres across the region.
The guide was extensively field checked by Hema’s dedicated Map Patrol and Alpha Teams, and includes comprehensive details on towns, national parks, accommodation, beaches, attractions, pre-trip planning and more.
The Top End and Gulf Atlas & Guide is available now from Hema Maps and selected retail outlets for $59.95.
*At time of writing Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park is closed for redevelopment.
