Eco Power World: Head off-grid with confidence

Eco Power World: Head off-grid with confidence - Caravan World Australia

Heading off-grid and concerned about your power requirements being met? Eco Power World has you covered.

The world of recreational vehicles (RVs) — and the necessary energy required to power them — has come a long way and continues to become increasingly sophisticated with each passing year. Eco Power World has been at the forefront of these advances, especially when it comes to your power management systems. In July 2023, Eco Power World became the proud sole distributor of the innovative EcoFlow Power Kits in Australia and New Zealand. Established in 2017, EcoFlow produces power solution for off-grid living and experiences, including caravans, motorhomes, tiny home and pod-type living.

The power solutions offered by Eco Power World give you peace of mind when you’re off the beaten track, in remote locations, or just wanting to stay somewhere for an extended period of time. Worrying about your power needs has the potential to make or break your holiday, so having a reliable system on board is indispensable to a successful and enjoyable trip.

Keeping you in control

When using Eco Power World power packs, you are granted the opportunity to live remotely for an extended time with little reliance on additional power sources. Connected to your phone or using the display console, you can stay constantly informed about your power input and output — keeping you in control.

The range

Eco Power World offers several different power management systems. Among those is the diverse, modular system which is perfect for extended off-grid travel. This system has two inverter size options (2600W and 3600W), allowing you, the consumer, to choose your power management requirements. This allows consumers to build their own power storage from 2kWh to 15kWh with the options of batteries — 2kWh and 5kWh. Users can also add a battery or two of the same size battery if they deem not to have sufficient power stored. Eco Power World assures that the batteries are very simple to add to any setup, with the plug-and-play design and provided there is correct space set aside for the installation.

Please note: Australian regulations require a licensed electrician to install the EcoFlow Power Kits.

How to stay powered off-grid

There are two main methods of keeping powered in remote areas, and those are battery storage with either solar input or generator power. The EcoFlow Power Kit from Eco Power World comes with 2–15kWh of battery power, is quiet and can be charged with solar, an alternator when driving and a generator. Having the option to choose solar power over generator power is a great inclusion, as most caravanners agree that generators are noisy (both for yourself and neighbouring campers), and they require you to carry addition fuel and tend to smell when in use.

How to make the most of your power off-grid

When we spoke to the team at Eco Power World, we had to ask them for their advice regarding how caravanners can make the most of their power when staying off-grid. They shared with us the following products to help, plus some tips and tricks for camping setups:

  • Be aware of which products you are running at the same time. Check the power usage for each item in comparison to the system in the caravan/motorhome.
  • Plan to run major appliances in the morning so the solar can charge the batteries for most of the day.
  • Turn off anything you are not using to conserve energy.
  • Fill the fridge early in the morning so the product (such as drinks) remains cool from overnight. This way the fridge doesn’t work hard to cool items that have heated up over the course of the day.
  • Park in areas that allow full sunlight to the solar panels for the best input.
  • We suggest having reliable power backup (for example, a generator) in case of multiple cloudy days with limited sunlight.
  • Have the most efficient product that will use the least amount of energy when in use.

Common mistakes and how they can be avoided

We also chatted with the team about some common mistakes people make when setting up (and using) power systems for off-grid travel, and any advice they could offer our readers about how to avoid these mistakes. Eco Power World recommends avoiding trying to use multiple products with high power requirements at the same time as this could overload the power management system’s capability. They also stress the importance of remembering you are in a mobile van and not at home where there are fewer power restrictions when using multiple products. Always having this fact in the back of your mind allows you to make better power decisions when on the road.

How to calculate how long your power setup will last off-grid

If you’re new to the off-grid lifestyle, or you just need a refresher, calculating how long your power setup will last off-grid is essential to a successful trip. It manages your expectations and gives you the opportunity to pack extra power banks, as an example of how to extend your power.

Each product has a power usage rating (i.e., 1000W). This is how much power the product will use per hour while in use. So, if the product runs for two hours, then there is a draw on the batteries of approximately 2000W. If you have 5000Wh of batteries, then 5000 divided by 1000 equals five hours of run time (without any input power). The input power can come from solar energy, alternator, generator and this will then extend the period of use by the relevant input power.

Built to withstand Aussie conditions

It would be amiss of us if we didn’t mention that travelling off-grid in Australia is not without its challenges. The roads and environment become rougher and tougher in the outback and some products are not designed or built to withstand these challenging conditions. But when it comes to Eco Power World products, they’ve already factored this in.

The EcoFlow Power Kit comes with unique mounting brackets that the manufacturers use to secure the Power Hub in place. When installed these assist in preventing the units from bouncing around and getting damaged. Eco Power World recommends customers do their part too, by ensuring to take due care when travelling in these environments. You can also make your life easier on rough roads by adjusting your speed limit, tyre air pressure and so on to the conditions of the road.

Customer support and warranties

Eco Power World is dedicated to supporting and assisting its customers. EcoFlow Power Kits have an app with a section of frequently asked questions along with a ‘LIVE Chat’ link to talk directly with EcoFlow (operating Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm AEST/AEDT). There are also short training videos on the website to assist consumers in getting started once they get home after the initial handover from the dealer.

Regarding Eco Power World’s warranty structure, there is a five-year warranty on the power hub and batteries, and the manufacturer’s dealers will assist with initial concerns.
