Tripping Out — Trip in a Van's Bucket List Experiences

Anyone who knows the best places to visit across Australia would have to include the Trip in A Van family. Their latest book dives into their favourite destinations.

You could say Bec and Justin Lorrimer helped kick off the online influencer scene when they began sharing their travels in 2015. The Leyland Brothers and Malcolm Douglas came before them of course, but they mostly travelled in 4WDs and their audience watched, glued to their TV screens.

The Lorrimers were a proper caravanning family of five who spent eight years travelling full-time, regularly sharing online posts that gained 250k Facebook followers, 260k Instagram followers and 196,000 YouTube subscribers. Using a variety of vans and tow vehicles, Trip in a Van covered 280,000 km across four laps around the country. Now settled in a home in Queensland to finish the children's schooling, the family still travels widely in their van whenever they can.

Bucket List Experiences is written by Bec and photographed by Justin, and it is aimed at travellers who want to make the most of their journey. Spanning over 300 pages and featuring hundreds of supporting images, Bec highlights more than 100 memorable locations across various categories. While predominantly focused on remote and high-end destinations, the book covers all states and includes popular swimming holes, beaches, national parks and family-friendly hikes. Practical, factual advice covers travel tips and essential information to know before you go.

The style is easy to read and inspiring, and it often tells the story of the family's changing journey over time, as in this entry about Hancock Gorge in Karijini National Park.

"The first time we attempted it, we made it only halfway before turning back because it was too risky with a baby on my back. The second time, we completed the hike, giving us a memorable adventure in a truly stunning location. We now consider it one of our favourite hikes."

What stood out most when we spoke with her about the book was Bec's enthusiasm for travel and sharing the experience. The book shares the same joy of exploring some of Australia's best offerings and includes practical tips on how to get there and what to know to make the most of your visit.

Bec admitted her favourite places included Cape Range National Park, where the desert meets the ocean, the islands and indigenous culture of East Arnhem Land and the waterfalls of the Gibb River Road.

Trip in a Van's Bucket List Experiences is an inspiring guide to hitting the road and a useful resource for trip planning. Published by Allen & Unwin, it is available from all good bookshops.
