Putting the OZ Braai Extreme Heat Gloves to the test

If you cook on an open fire, you should have a pair of gloves in case you need to handle hot items. A lot of us (me included) have used welding gloves as they tend to be super robust and do the job of preventing too much heat from coming into your delicate hands.

The issue I have with them is dexterity. The welders gloves I have are long, they run up to my elbow and they are thick with heavy seams around the fingers. This makes them challenging to put on quickly and to use when delicacy is needed.

Step in the OZ Braai Extreme Heat Gloves which have closer to the full range of motion you'd expect of a traditional winter glove with the added benefits of non-slip padding and decent heat protection.

Using them with some cast iron pans on both gas stoves and open fires, I found them decent, worth their low cost even if they are not as good as welders gloves on heat protection.

Lifting my short-handled iron pans off an open flame was easy enough, I reckon I could have held the panhandle for 20 seconds comfortably and lifting a camp oven lid was much, much easier than with welders gloves.

One thing I learned again and the single most important thing to consider with these (and any fire or heat gloves) is to not let them get wet as moisture can transfer heat. I knew this but was reminded, painfully, when picking up a cast iron pan with a damp glove.

Aramid fibre and silicone are used to create the heat and abrasion-resistant fabrics which is known as the Fortamid range. They come in three colours and are one-size fits all, so there's no hassle finding the right size.

For the price, I genuinely recommend them. At $39 they are worth having around even just to wear on cold days during a camping trip as the extra padding afforded by the heat protection is great at keeping hands warm and the anti-slip pads are great for grabbing smooth and slippery things. They'll make a great addition to any outdoor cooking setup.

We have a deal with A247 where you can use the code ADVENTURES24 for 10 per cent off your total purchase (not restricted to just these heat-resistant gloves so get shopping!).
