

We put the new Ooni Koda 2 14in Gas Powered Pizza Oven through its paces on the road — and this compact, camp-friendly cooker turns out top-notch pizzas in a minute.
This latest versatile pizza oven from Ooni should enhance mealtimes when you’re on the road. Weighing just over 16kg with its 15mm Cordierite cooking stone installed, the Ooni Koda 2 14in Gas Powered Pizza Oven is compact and light enough to become part of your travel gear.
Stainless steel legs fold to a size of 55cm x 47cm x 18 cm, and an optional travel bag wraps around the oven for easy transport and protection from scratches while travelling. The new version boasts a modern, stylish design and is crafted from black powder-coated carbon steel. It features a row of burners that can heat up to 500°C in just 15 minutes, while also allowing for cooking at a variety of temperatures from as low as 190°C. The supplied gas hose fits a standard 9kg or 4.5kg gas bottle, so you can hook it up to your van’s gas supply rather than relying on a small gas canister.

Handy accessories to match
Ooni sells a wide range of accessories to suit the Koda pizza ovens. We tried out the Ultimate Accessories Bundle, which includes a wide loading peel (the spatula used to get the pizza in and out of the hot oven), a narrow turning peel, a digital thermometer, an oven brush, a timber serving board, a pizza cutter and storage containers. All items are available separately if you don’t need the full bundle.
We also tested the dual-sided cast-iron Grizzler Plate, ideal for fast grilling meat, fish or vegetables.

Before we cooked our first pizza, we ran the oven at high temperature to cure it and rid it of any manufacturing elements. My wife Heather makes bread regularly, even when we are on the road, and her pizza dough mix is simple: warm water, plain flour, dry yeast, olive oil and a pinch of salt.
Mix the ingredients and once the dough rises, pat it down for a second rise, divide into smaller portions and flatten them out into a pizza-shape, ready for the toppings.
The secret of the Ooni Koda 2 is its speed. A 14in pizza takes around a minute to cook fully. You’ll have to keep on your toes and turn it regularly — almost constantly — to avoid it burning. I was surprised at how quickly the dough and toppings cooked through, and the result was a perfect pizza. The second pizza was ready to go straight away.

Putting the Ooni Grizzler Plate to the test
We also used the Optional Grizzler Plate to cook some steak, and the process is nearly as quick as cooking pizza. The plate features a ribbed surface for meat and a flat surface on the other side, accommodating a variety of meals. With the oven set low, you could cook fried eggs or an omelette on the flat side.
