Planning a post-Easter trip? Julia Creek’s Dirt n Dust Festival marks 30 years this April, a great excuse to explore outback Queensland.

If you’re planning your post-Easter adventures or getting ready to point your van north for the start of the dry season, here’s an event to add to your itinerary. The Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival in northwestern Queensland is celebrating its 30th anniversary this April, with three action-packed days (17–19 April) filled with its trademark mix of mud, music and outback hospitality.

And after a tough wet season across northwestern Queensland, there’s never been a better time to consider a trip west (weather permitting) and support these remote outback communities.

Travel smart and stay safe

It’s no secret that parts of northern and western Queensland have copped heavy rainfall and flooding in recent months. As always, check road and weather updates before you head off and make sure routes are open and safe.

If they are, don’t be too quick to scratch these towns off your itinerary. Communities like Julia Creek and surrounding areas rely on the flow of travellers through the cooler months, and a stopover — whether for a festival weekend or a few nights in town — goes a long way in helping local businesses bounce back after a hard season.

What’s happening at the 30th Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival?

Set 646km west of Townsville along the Overlanders Way (or a meatier 1628km drive northwest from Brisbane), Julia Creek is home to around 400 locals. During the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival, that number swells into the thousands as visitors roll in with caravans, 4WDs, swags and a healthy sense of adventure.

What started back in 1994 as a pub conversation about putting the town on the map has grown into one of outback Queensland’s best-known events. The original triathlon-and-bull-ride concept has evolved into a full weekend program featuring:

  • The South32 DnD Adventure Run (with plenty of mud guaranteed)

  • Dirt n Dust Rodeo action under lights on Friday and Saturday nights

  • Country racing at the Multicom Resources Artesian Express Race Day (Saturday)

  • Live music across two big nights

  • Fashions on the Field and family-friendly activities

  • The famous (and equally hilarious) Australia’s Best Butt Competition

It’s equal parts grit, humour and community spirit, and that’s exactly why festivalgoers keep coming back year after year.

110 years of country racing in Julia Creek

The 30th anniversary isn’t the only celebration on the cards. The Julia Creek Turf Club is also marking the milestone of 110 years of country racing, making the Saturday race day extra special in 2026.

Queensland talent takes centre stage

Outback festivals aren’t complete without some true-blue Aussie musicians hitting the stage, and the 2026 Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival won’t disappoint. This year’s program showcases some of Queensland’s best home-grown country talent, headlined by Moranbah’s Bella Mackenzie on Saturday night, alongside a mix of emerging and established acts across the weekend.

The Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival isn’t a polished, big-city event, and that’s the point. It’s a celebration of outback Queensland at its best, so expect red dirt, big skies, bigger personalities and plenty of fun.

Camp close to the action

If you’re bringing your caravan, camper or RV, check out the camping area at McIntyre Park, which is within walking distance of the festival precinct.

Sites are unpowered and campers need to be self-sufficient, but toilets and showers are available, and courtesy buses run across the weekend to connect key locations. A weekend camping pass is $75 per site (three nights, unpowered), with limited spots available.

There are also other options in town, including the Julia Creek Caravan Park and Creekside Free RV Camping. As always during major events, book ahead — motels, hotels and other accommodation tend to book out quickly.

Add it to your dry season run

For many travellers, April is a great time to kickstart a northern migration. While the dry season doesn’t officially begin until May in most areas, travelling in the shoulder months can mean fewer crowds and just as memorable experiences.

If road and weather conditions allow, including the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival in your travel plans is a great way to break up long highway or backroad stretches and experience the heart of a rural community doing what it does best.

Outback towns have had a challenging start to the year, but they’re resilient, welcoming and keen to see travellers return when it’s safe to do so.

So, if you’re planning that post-Easter escape or plotting your 2026 dry season lap, consider heading west. A weekend in Julia Creek might just be the kind of red-dirt reset you didn’t know you needed.
