Designed for families with young children, the Infinity 15 hybrid from Jawa Off Road Campers opens up to an 18ft (5.5m) surprise package of everything you’ll need to head off-grid.

Jawa Campers is an Australian-owned company based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. All Jawa campers are built in China to an Australian specification, with much of the finishing done in Jawa’s Australian factory. The Infinity 15 is designed for family use, is 15ft (4.57m) long, and will fold out to a much longer camper when fully set up.

Build quality

The Jawa Infinity 15 is a beefy hybrid, built to never bend to the rough treatment of outback tracks. This means it’s a tough, almost overengineered construction based on a 150mm x 50mm x 4mm steel chassis with a trailing arm independent suspension. The welds looked neat and heavy-duty cross beams added to the chassis rigidity and strength.

For improved endurance, Lovells spring and two Lovells shock absorbers per wheel are sent to the China factory for installation, and the team fit Japanese wheel bearings and offroad magnets on the 12in drum brakes.

The body is TIG welded together from 50mm x 30mm C-section aluminium with high-density foam insulation between skins of aluminium composite inside and out. The single-piece roof lifts on electric rams from a switch just inside the entry door, and the robust honeycomb composite floor was sturdy underfoot.

Two poly water tanks under the van have metal shrouds for protection and scrub bars on either side look like they would guard the body well.

Up front, there is a Cruisemaster DO35 hitch and a permanently mounted ARK jockey wheel that makes hitching up easier. The Infinity 15 has fold-out ‘expander-style’ ends for the main bed, which are often seen in this hybrid style, and they add significantly to the space available inside.

A well-designed outdoor kitchen is the essential ingredient in a successful hybrid, and Jawa has created a winner here. The fold-down table includes built-in storage and further back the slide-out kitchen reveals a very functional area with a large pantry on the van’s side wall. The stainless-steel construction appears bulletproof, indicating it is built to last; however, I wonder if there might be a possibility for some weight savings here. One departure from most hybrids I have seen is the large, self-supporting 270-degree awning that provides excellent coverage for the exterior kitchen.

The interior fitout is a mix of lightweight ply joinery with aluminium drawers, and it looks neat if a little busy. The bunks at the front are huge, so the younger children will have loads of room to entertain themselves on wet days.

Jawa does much of the final fitout at its Caloundra factory in Queensland as well as its Windsor factory in New South Wales, and the quality of the work, especially on the electrical system, is excellent. The electrical components are Victron, which I rate highly, and the wiring is high-class. I also noted a quality German Eberspacher diesel heater, EuroVision windows, Dometic dust reduction system and a Truma instantaneous water heater.

Suitability for intended touring

Aimed squarely at young couples with children, the Jawa Infinity 15 has infinite possibilities for exploring the country. There’s enough battery power to live comfortably off-grid, but you could also organise a caravan park cruise of the coast.

It’s a natural step up from a camper for those who have outgrown canvas, but for many owners, it will be their first van because it is keenly priced and well equipped. It fills its role admirably with space for a family and a decent amount of self-sufficiency.

Towability

When loaded to the 530kg payload, it has an ATM of 2990kg, so most mid-range 4WDs can easily tow the Infinity. For our tow test, the Jawa-wrapped Ford Ranger looked great in front of the van, and it might be the perfect match. The narrow track of the van meant it fitted neatly behind the Ranger, and I had wide views to the rear through some MSA 4X4 Accessories Towing Mirrors.

The Infinity 15 towed smoothly, and the Ranger’s power kept us easily at highway speeds on the open road. There was no harshness through the hitch on the dirt section and no wandering in corners. Braking from the 12in drums was progressive and efficient.

Self-sufficiency

Jawa’s units are built offshore and shipped here, where a lot of the components — including all the electrics — are completed at are completed at Jawa’s Queensland and New South Wales factories.

The Infinity 15 is a great little hybrid for families who like to explore outside traditional caravan parks and campgrounds and head down some dirt tracks for some free camping.

It certainly has the capacity to keep you comfortable off-grid at least a week. The team at Jawa told us he took the Infinity 15 to K’gari (Fraser Island), Qld, for seven days and had no issues with the hybrid’s off-grid capabilities and said that many Jawa customers have shared similar experiences. Depending on the number of people on board, how long you’re off-grid and how careful you are the only limitations you might deal with are the water and cassette toilet. But you can option in an OGO composting toilet which will make your water supply last longer.

Speaking of water there’s two 120L freshwater tanks, which is pretty generous, and one 80L tank to capture grey water when you’re set up in national parks and the like.

Some 600W of solar feed into a whopping 460Ah of lithium batteries with a 3000W Victron inverter to convert all that power to run 240V appliances such as the air-conditioner. The Infinity 15 comes with a 120A battery charger and two MPPT solar chargers — one 50A looking after the 600W solar roof panels and a 30A MPPT for portable panels. A 50A DCDC feeds the van through the vehicle input while on the move, and all of the power is run through the Victron Cerbo GX and displayed and managed through the GX Touch 50 display screen.

Liveability

The Jawa Infinity 15 just keeps on giving in terms of the features, which make camping trips fun and easy. Hybrids are great for their capacity to do most of your living and eating and cooking outdoors, while inside is mainly for bathing and sleeping.

A standout for the Infinity 15 is the 270-degree batwing awning (which is an optional extra) which gives you a huge amount of outdoor undercover living space. It’s Australian-made and you can get walls for all sides to enclose the space from the weather and increase your outdoor living area.

Up front there is a bike rack, a toolbox with firewood storage on top, covered storage for jerry cans and fresh water, a barbecue slide, as well as fridge slide for a 96L Evakool which is included in the price. Outside the Infinity 15 there’s also a picnic table and shelving for wine/spirits/glasses — a mini bar of sorts. Next to that is the outdoor kitchen with four gas burners, sink, stainless steel work surfaces and drawers, a built-in pantry for condiments and the like.

Heading inside, the two bunks are located near the front entry door. The bottom one is large —almost a double — and the top one can be folded away to make way for extra seating. Each has a fan, reading light and 12V charging point. The internal kitchen has a sink and two burner induction hotplate.

There’s a king size bed for adults, which folds away for driving, a combination bathroom with toilet/shower, diesel heating, air-conditioning, dining table and seating for two people. You’d be surprised at how much is packed away into this neat little package of just 15ft which opens out to 18ft.

Value for money

With a base price of $77,500 you really get a lot of bang for buck with the Jawa Infinity 15. It’s targeted at families with young kids and has enough self-sufficiency to camp off-grid but it would be just at home in a caravan park.

The van we judged had options such as the bike rack, the 4.2m (13ft 8in) batwing awning and the steady legs which brought the price up to $84,500, which is still good value for a hybrid \that has everything you will need.

Ease of use

Of all the COTY contenders, the Infinity 15 takes the longest to set up. That’s not really a surprise, given that it’s a camper trailer hybrid designed that way. For some, setting up their campsite how they want it is all part of the camping experience.

Getting organised is pretty straightforward, with an electric roof actuator raising the roof in about 30 seconds. At the rear, the spare wheel mount is easily lowered, allowing the rear panels to be swung out and up to expand the rear bed area. Everything (fridge, hob and barbecue) slides out easily into position for the external kitchen facilities. The hardest thing to do is lift the bikes on and off the bike rack, given its height. It all takes about 30 minutes, which isn’t a long time to set up for a week.

The interior layout is family oriented, and while there’s not much room for personal space in the event of bad weather, the bunks and rear bed offer some escape room. Drawers are fitted in wherever possible, offering plenty of storage space. Outside the hybrid, it’s the same story. There are plenty of external compartments, many with the convenience of a slide-out.

The compact but functional internal kitchenThe compact but functional internal kitchen

Having a tare mass just under 2500kg, the Infinity 15 is quite a smooth towing proposition. The towing height of 2.65m (8ft 7in) reduces the effect of wind on the towing. There’s no real difficulty with manoeuvring around.

Innovation

One of the most striking features of the Infinity 15 is the 270-degree batwing awning. It’s quite simple to set up and offers considerable undercover area. Handy on both warm summer days and when it’s raining.

And while it’s not unique, the lower bunk is larger than the top, which I found a nice touch and gives some lucky person more bed space. In addition, the top bunk can be lifted out of the way to make a lower seat. I like that white/orange scene lights are fitted all around, offering plenty of illumination at night.

Customer care

Jawa’s terms and conditions of warranty are quite well laid out on the manufacturer’s website. Jawa offers a one-year manufacturer warranty, which is short these days, and a five-year structural warranty. The usual OEM component warranties apply. The warranty applies to the original purchaser only, and some conditions apply to campers purchased as ex-display models. Any warranty work can be done by an authorised representative of Jawa, but the work must be approved by Jawa beforehand.

X-Factor

As a hybrid, the Infinity 15 isn’t exceptionally lightweight, but at the same time, it will suit a wide range of tow vehicles. It’s great for a family that likes the off-grid/offroad lifestyle. The batwing awning is a plus, and although the interior area is confined, there’s plenty of undercover living area. I particularly liked how the nearside wall pantry is kitted out with shelves and drawers, making everything easy to get at. Designed for inside comforts and outdoor living, it has great kitchen facilities, excellent external storage and is excellent for towing to your favourite hard-to-reach campsites.
