Galaxy Odyssey Series 2 Caravan Review

In the extra-competitive RV sector, the Series 2 Odyssey from Galaxy Caravans is deliberately pitched to a wide audience. Although it’s the entry-level model in the Galaxy range, the Odyssey is packaged to please with a swag of inclusions including a full rear ensuite.

GALAXY CARAVANS

The van is built on a 4in SupaGal chassis with strengthening strap on the drawbar and punched-hole C-section cross members, which creates some weight savings. Simple leaf-spring suspension is fitted with Simplicity independent or Control Rider independent coil with shockers optional. Stopping power is courtesy of 12in drums with electric assistance rolling on 15in alloy wheels and light truck tyres. The water tanks are protected with galvanised sheeting.

A standard 50mm ball coupling rides up front with a mechanical handbrake, twin 9kg gas cylinders, removable 8in jockey wheel and a tray between the drawbar rails for hoses and the like.

INTERIOR DESIGN

As functional and attractive as the exterior is, it’s the internal design that really shines, with striking textured charcoal cabinets complementing the glossy white interior. Curtains, rather than blinds, soften the look and provide a warm, homely feel.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of workmanship and materials used within
the van. Wherever I looked, the caravan was well-finished, showing a pleasing attention to detail.

KITCHEN

Directly opposite the lounge, in the middle of the van, the kitchen runs along the far wall. There is more overhead storage, a Dometic three-way 120L fridge-freezer, 20L microwave, stainless steel sink with cutting board and draining rack, flick-mixer tap, pull-out pantry, combo four-burner cooktop/grill and roll top black Laminex benchtops and splashbacks. The metal-sided drawers use roller runners with gripper catches to keep them closed on the move, while others which can carry more weight, such as the pot drawers, score push-button locking mechanisms.

**THE CARAVAN WORLD VERDICT**

With an ATM of 2215kg, the van rides on a single axle and sits in the Ford Territory tow vehicle market.

Overall, there was little to dislike with this van. If it was mine, I would have explored other options to lighten the interior – either a different coloured lounge suite or a lighter coloured benchtop and splash back. But, in the scheme of things, that’s small pickings, particularly given the wide range of furnishings to choose from. From all angles and at this price point,

the Odyssey is a winner.
