Western Australia’s Shire of Exmouth is part of the 2025 Top Tourism Town Awards and has used the opportunity to ask travellers to explore the wonders of the Ningaloo Coast consciously and responsibly.
With tourism on the rise, the Shire is urging visitors to plan and secure a booking before arriving, helping to ease pressure on local infrastructure and protect the fragile coastal ecosystem. The message is clear: a bit of preparation goes a long way toward preserving the region for future generations.
By promoting pre-booked travel, the Shire seeks to manage visitor flow efficiently, helping to preserve the vital balance between a thriving tourism experience and environmental conservation.
This year’s award entry puts a spotlight on Exmouth’s ongoing sustainability efforts, from eco-conscious tourism initiatives to strategies aimed at minimising environmental impact across the board while also recognising the region’s natural beauty.
Already a standout destination with multiple accolades under its belt — including three consecutive gold medals in Western Australia, induction into the Tourism Council Western Australia Hall of Fame and two national gold awards as Australia’s Top Tourism Town (population under 5000) — Exmouth is once again aiming to balance tourism with conservation in its latest awards push.
Exmouth’s 2025 Top Tourism Town Awards entry reflects the Shire’s continued focus on sustainable tourism and its efforts to preserve the pristine environment of the Ningaloo region. Locals and travellers alike have been encouraged to participate in the Top Tourism Town Awards voting process, contributing to the collective push for responsible travel.
“We love sharing the unparalleled beauty of Exmouth with visitors from around the globe,” Shire president, Matt Niikkula said.

“However, we also recognise our responsibility to safeguard this precious environment for future generations. This year, we’re focusing on promoting eco-conscious travel, litter prevention and the importance of choosing approved accommodation solutions, particularly designated camping areas that align with the North West Cape’s carrying capacity.”
“We are calling on the support of locals and visitors alike and invite everyone to participate in the voting for the Top Tourism Town Awards and join us in championing responsible tourism. We would love to welcome you to Exmouth — with a booking — to experience the magic of Ningaloo in a way that respects our environment and supports our community.”
