AOR Closure
Founded in 2000 by Steve Budden in his garage in Maleny, on the Queensland Sunshine Coast hinterland, Australian Off Road (AOR) shocked owners, prospective buyers, and staff by suddenly shutting up shop on 9 September.
Staff were sent home, phones disconnected, and the website, official forum, and Facebook pages were abruptly taken offline. The Caloundra factory was cleared out and the gates locked, leaving custom builds and servicing jobs stranded inside.
A Storied History
As Budden's designs gathered interest, the business grew from a backyard operation into one of Australia's most respected and capable brands. Back in the early 2000s, the market for hard-walled off-road hybrid caravans was practically non-existent. Soft-floor camper trailers dominated the remote touring scene, and the influx of imported options had yet to take hold.
AOR pioneered the transition toward compact, dust-proof hybrid designs. Early successes like the Odyssey camper trailer established the company's engineering philosophy: matching towing vehicle tracks, maintaining lightweight yet rigid body construction, and engineering superior dust-sealing systems. The introduction of models like the Quantum, Matrix, and Aurora redefined what touring enthusiasts expected from off-grid comfort. AOR met a demand for tough, go-anywhere campers and hybrids built for hard-core adventure, backed by a fiercely loyal customer base.
The story of brands starting in home garages is a familiar one in Australia, but not all startups achieve the level of success AOR did. At its peak, it had grown into a major Sunshine Coast business, employing about 100 staff across its dedicated factory and showroom. In 2025, they celebrated their quarter-century anniversary by building 250 units, including exports to the USA.
They won several Camper Trailer of the Year awards, local business awards, and the 2025 Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA) People’s Choice Manufacturer of the Year award.
Dents Appear
Reports online suggest there have been delays in new van deliveries and warranty remedies for much of 2026. A support page for AOR owners and buyers was set up earlier this week, with over 800 members already listed. Several buyers have posted about paying substantial deposits for vans that haven't been delivered, and ABC News reported that owners of vans in for service were locked out from collecting them.
After over a week, AOR owner Steve Budden brought the website and Facebook accounts back online and announced the company was going into administration.
Budden stated that the company had faced "an increasingly difficult operating environment."
He continued, noting "that the company has been subjected to intensifying product copying, with competitors reproducing concepts, features, and design approaches developed through years of AOR’s engineering and product development. At the same time, the market has experienced significant price pressure from increasingly sophisticated imports, making it difficult for a premium Australian manufacturer to compete on price while maintaining local manufacturing, employment, and quality standards."
He also pointed to "growing competition from manufacturers operating in lower-cost parts of Australia, particularly southern states where lower wage and property rental costs can provide a significant structural cost advantage over manufacturing on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. For a business committed to Australian manufacturing, these pressures have created an increasingly difficult commercial equation: customers continue to value Australian design, engineering, and construction, but the market has become increasingly price-driven."
While there was an acknowledgement of the disappointment and uncertainty facing employees, customers, suppliers, dealers, and the broader AOR community, there was no explanation for the stress caused by the total blackout and sudden disappearance of the brand. Customers are left facing the long, drawn-out administrative process of winding up or a potential sale of assets.
What also remains unclear is the registration of a new business entity, AOR Holding Co,on 3rd September, which includes registered business names such as Australian Off Road, Australian Offroad Campers, AOR Service, and Trax Adventure Company. This may point to a potential restructuring or sale, though no announcement regarding an administrator has been formally confirmed.
Interestingly, the AOR Facebook page has left comments open. While some responses have been supportive and sympathetic, several prospective buyers have been considerably less forgiving.
Customers Left Out to Dry Again
Following on from the sudden closure of Zone RV, the disappearance of AOR has hit the Queensland RV industry hard and cast a shadow over the reputation of caravanning nationwide.
The way AOR's management handled the closure serves as a textbook example of how not to treat customers and buyers. Whatever happened behind closed doors, the flow-on effect has been devastating to buyers left out of pocket by tens of thousands of dollars in lost deposits and broken dreams.
The industry must do better. A business doesn't become insolvent overnight. Closing the gates and sacking staff taints the whole caravan manufacturing sector. Taking deposits from people when there's no realistic prospect of delivering a van warrants serious scrutiny. Entering into business models that rely heavily on significant progressive payments without financial security requires far greater caution.
It is a sad day for AOR, but it reflects a broader shift across Australian manufacturing and the RV industry in particular. The sector is still managing the aftermath of post-COVID expansions and cost blowouts, amplified by broader economic shifts.
Hopefully, there is better news behind the current information blackout. AOR remains a landmark adventure brand in the Australian landscape, and it would be a welcome relief if a buyer steps in from the wings to keep the story going.
