2014 Reveiw: Cheap caravans under $50k

When it comes to caravans that are big on features and small on price, we’re spoilt for choice in Australia.

These days, $50,000 will buy you a big-name hardtop or pop-top caravan with a level of standard equipment that would have barely made it onto a luxury van a decade ago. And with competition for your RV dollar so keen, there’s little room for manufacturers to cut quality to get your business.

In this video Caravan World Editor Max Taylor and contributor Michael Browning unveil three budget beauties with nice big bedrooms, central galley kitchens and full bathrooms, which are all around or under the $50,000 mark.

Budget caravans

Jayco Starcraft

Price: $48,990 (tow-away, Vic)

Despite being a hardroof caravan, the Jayco Starcraft feels nice and bright and airy, almost like a pop-top. It's got big windows, sky-lights and light toned panelling. The Starcraft has been around for a while now and kind of feels like the little brother of the Jayco Sterling. It shares the same DNA as the larger Jayco caravans and is the least expensive of the trio we tested. What many people love about the Starcraft is the storage space in the bedroom, including robes and draws.

Coronet FS2-5950

Price: $49,990 (ex-factory, Vic)

Coronet have very cleverly turned a pop-top into a full caravan by creating a folding wall ensuite. It's one of the reasons this van came up trumps at Best Aussie Vans competition last year. It displays the high level of innovation that can be found in Australian caravans. We also love the storage – there are so many nooks and crannies. And this particular van tows really well, it's not overly heavy or long, so for a pop-top it ticks a lot of boxes.

Royal Flair PD Series

Price: $49,990 (excluding on-roads, Vic)

Royal Flair is a good family company that have been around for a few decades now. They are a mainstay on the Australian caravan scene. The cabinetry is distinctive and sophisticated and the interior is split into three very distinct zones. The bedroom zone, closed off from the living area by a partition, as well as a full bathroom that feels very much like a separate room.
