Vehicle Components given legal green light to upgrade light trailer suspensions

Queensland suspension manufacturer Vehicle Components (VC) has become the first company in the state to receive official government approval to carry out caravan and camper suspension upgrades.

Vehicle Components, which manufacturers the popular Cruisemaster independent suspension system, among others, has been granted type approval by the state's Department Of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to upgrade and modify the suspension systems on light trailers, weighing up to 4.5t.

Until now, upgrading caravan and camper trailer suspension systems has always been a grey area, as there was no light vehicle category within the legislation that dealt with this type of modification.

VC general manager Mat Claringbold told CW the company approached the government and proactively sought approval and certification in a bid to close the loophole.

Following an investigation into the company's engineering capability and a site inspection, approval was granted.

VC managing director Chris Goddard said upgrading and modifying suspensions should only be carried out by competent professionals, to reduce any possible risks, and he was proud VC would lead the way.
